Richard is a qualified physiotherapist from Sydney University and
member of both the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and the
Australian Physiotherapy Association. He began an interest in Pilates
in 1995 and in 1998 began official training in London to become the
first physiotherapist to graduate from the Pilates Foundation UK
two-year training programme. Richard served for several years on the
Pilates Foundation UK's board, in charge of professional malpractice
insurance, code of conduct development and trade mark protection. He
also taught anatomy, neurology and biomechanics to the Pilates
Foundation training courses and continues to maintain a close
relationship with many Pilates teachers and students. Richard is a
member of the Organisation for Chartered Physiotherapists in Private
Practice (Physio First) and remains very active as a dance
physiotherapist with the neoclassical ballet company, Ballet Black
(Associate company of the Royal Opera House, London).
He is also founder and managing director of Physiobase.com the world's biggest physiotherapy
professional web portal. Physiobase has, in Jan 2011, a membership of
over 50,000 physiotherapists with representation from more than 180
countries. As part of this business he developed and continues to
manage one of the largest malpractice insurance books in Australia for
the Physio profession under the brand name Physiosure. He also built
and manages the largest online physio specific jobs and courses
website, PhysioBob's Jobs. Richard's daily life consists of working in
this practice in Harley Street central London, moderating the Physio
Forum, developing physiotherapy products and services and managing the
insurance needs of his Physiosure customers.
In 2002 Richard became London's first physiotherapist to become
Gyrotonic certified. His proactive and preventative approach to his
work comes from his years of wide and varied experience from the
hospital, to the clinic, to the sports world. In addition to his
ongoing work in his practice, he's worked closely with elite athletes
specializing in swimming, triathlon and alpine ski racing and has held
positions in the Australian Paralympic Federation Medical Commission,
the ISMWSF and the Australian Men's Alpine Ski Team. He also regularly
mountaineers in Europe having climbed Mt Elbrus in Russia, Mt Blanc and
also has completed the 6-day Haute Route from Chamonix, France to
Zermatt, Switzerland. His current challenge is kite surfing.
Richard co-researched and was part of the faculty working party who
wrote the UK 2000 Guidelines for the Treatment of Occupationally
Related Lower Back Pain. He is the physiotherapist for Ballet Black and
the Trinity College of Music & also consults to the London Fire
Brigade, the City of London Police, Unilever UKCR and a number of
corporations on occupational and health and fitness issues.
Richard's latest challenge is bringing to the wider physiotherapy
community a new cloud-based practice management system and an
integrated musculoskeletal exercise prescription program.
